Open Ideas National Competition 2025 – Season V
The Felicitation Ceremony of the Open Ideas National Competition 2025 – Season V was successfully held at the Firodia Auditorium of Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune. The competition was jointly organized by Inaf Forum and Sustainability Initiatives, with the support of AVP Group, and focused on innovative approaches to improving the livability of small houses in rapidly urbanizing regions. The event brought together architects, academicians, students, and housing experts from across India to explore practical, inclusive, and climate-responsive housing solutions.
Addressing the gathering, Corporator Kunal Tilak emphasized the urgent need to rethink urban redevelopment in cities like Pune, where heritage structures, traditional wadas, temples, and modern residential developments coexist. He highlighted that redevelopment must be sensitive to cultural identity while ensuring better infrastructure and livability. He further stressed that affordable housing projects should integrate green elements such as small gardens and tree plantations to enhance environmental sustainability and quality of life.
Founder President Kirtee Shah spoke about the challenges posed by rapid urbanization, noting that multi-generational families continue to live in compact homes with diverse spatial and social needs. He encouraged young architects to innovate within limited spaces while maintaining functionality and dignity. International Housing and Urban Development Consultant Geoffrey Payne, who addressed the audience online, raised critical questions about urban livability in the context of climate change and increasing land scarcity.
The competition received nationwide participation across themes such as affordable urban housing, rural housing, slum improvement, and furniture and interior design. Winners were felicitated with cash prizes, mementos, and certificates, reinforcing the competition’s commitment to fostering sustainable, inclusive, and forward-thinking urban development solutions.
