Green roofs

As the city of Pune is growing rapidly, it needs to adapt to the extremes of climate change, increased energy consumption, loss of greenery/ biodiversity, amenity space and contribute to healthy living. Energy consumption in buildings is dependent on envelope design. More barren roofs and exposed concrete surfaces leads to more heat gain in buildings resulting in an urban heat Island effecting the micro climate of the place resulting in increased temperatures.

Sustainability Initiatives undertook a research in ‘Green roofs’ for such identifies environmental issues of the city.

Across the world ‘green’ roofs which include vegetated and insulated roofs have been successfully implemented for its environmental, economic and social benefits. In Pune there are very few buildings which have adopted these alternatives. The motivation behind undertaking this research project is to utilize the untapped roof spaces for its environmental and recreational benefits contributing towards sustainable urban growth.
