Pune City had participated in the Global Mayors’ Challenge by Bloomberg Philanthropies’ in 2021 with its proposal to create an Electric Vehicle (EV) readiness plan and City EV fund. The proposal was drafted in support of the adoption of electric vehicles in Pune. During this phase of the challenge, Bloomberg Philanthropies had requested Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to develop a prototype of its proposal. The prototype being developed by the PMC entails a governance structure for planning, coordination, and decision-making. Some of the primary aspects of the prototype include- promoting and enabling EV adoption, including coordination with central and state policies, local fiscal and non fiscal incentives, infrastructure siting and commissioning, electricity tariff design, and consumer awareness. The governance structure will be referred to as the Pune City EV Cell.
To support the design of the City EV Cell, Sustainability Initiatives supported Pune team in carrying out following activities:
• Citizen survey: Around 1000 citizens were surveyed across the city which included EV owners, students, auto and cab drivers, working professionals. The survey acted as a crucial indicator of the awareness about Electric Vehicles among the citizens of Pune.
• Industry round-table workshop: A round table workshop with urban local bodies and EV industry was conducted on 22nd October 2021 to facilitate the adoption of EVs in Pune City. Around 80-100 participants from the EV industry and government departments attended this workshop. The chief guests for the ceremony were Hon. Mayor Mr. Muralidhar Mohol and Mr. Vijay Kulkarni (Road Department). Hon. Mayor of Pune presented the existing EV ecosystem scenario in the city and also talked about future plans for making the city EV ready. The workshop helped facilitate an open platform for discussions, and served as a platform for seeking industry feedback on Pune’s electric mobility initiatives.
