First Golden Dialogue: Role of Placemaking in Urban Revitalisation

To discuss the changing urban scapes in India and to talk about the current topics in the field of architecture, a series of Golden Dialogues was inaugurated on 14th October by Vishwas Kulkarni, senior architect of VK Group of Architecture on the occasion of VK’s Jubilee Year. At this panel discussion, Anirudh Shahapure, knowledge officer of Pune Smart City Corporation said, ‘While developing new public spaces in the city, a comprehensive approach should be taken. How it will positively affect civic life should be considered. The needs of every city are different, and thus, each city needs to have a different approach to planning and protocols should be curated as per the individual city’s requirements. Foe example, parking spaces should be planned in Pune city now. Architects should come forward with new ideas for it and they should become spokespersons for the overall development process. Architect Anita Khandekar said, ‘Citizens of the city should have free spaces to move, communicate, work and relax. The ‘placemaking’ technique is important in this urban revitalization process. There are many challenges in realizing the Pune Smart City concept. Good policies, funding and administrative decisions are essential’. Vijay Sane, representing VKU Urban said, ‘Placemaking’ techniques should create more public spaces with structural, functional and aesthetic qualities that will enhance the quality of life of people spending their free time in such spaces. These places should be able to touch our hearts and they should be easily accessible for one and all. He also added that there are many challenges in India and that priority should be given to things that are useful to all. While doing so, the views of all the concerned sectors of people should be taken into consideration and that it should be planned keeping citizens as the main point of focus Rohit Gadia, representing Studio Infill added, ‘While creating public places, basic life essentials like cleanliness, seating, lighting should be taken care of.’ Finally, Nakul Rege from Urban Tree said, ‘Ingenuity should be practiced while giving a new look to public spaces. For any city, conservation of public spaces and its famous sites contributes to the progress of the city’. The anchoring at this insightful discussion panel was done by Priya Gokhale from Wide Angle Forum, the honorable speakers were welcomed by Ar Dwaipayan Chakravarty, while the introductions were done by Dr. Poorva Keskar.
